What cookies were doing for personalisation

Two different jobs:

  • First-party cookies. Your own domain remembering a shopper across sessions. Still alive. Browsers and regulators don't restrict first-party cookies in the same way.
  • Third-party cookies. Cross-site tracking for advertising and shared identity. Being phased out by browsers and limited by regulation.

Most ecommerce personalisation uses first-party cookies. The cookieless conversation is usually about reducing reliance on identifiable user data, not about removing cookies entirely.

What replaces third-party tracking

  • Server-side first-party tracking. Your server captures behaviour and pushes it to your personalisation platform via API, not through browser cookies.
  • Session-scoped signals. Personalisation that works on the current session's behaviour without persistent user records.
  • Contextual personalisation. What's on the page, what's in the cart, what the customer searched for. No user history required.
  • Authenticated first-party data. Email, account, or order data the customer gave you directly under proper consent.

What your store needs to function without third-party cookies

  • Consent-mode integration with your CMP. Tracks consent state and respects it.
  • Personalisation that works on session signals. Doesn't fall apart when persistent user records aren't available.
  • First-party email collection. Direct relationship rather than third-party retargeting.
  • Server-side feed and event APIs. Bypass browser tracking restrictions for catalogue and behaviour data.

TL;DR

  • Cookieless personalisation usually means "works on first-party signals without relying on third-party tracking", not "no cookies anywhere".
  • What replaces it: server-side tracking, session-scoped signals, contextual personalisation, authenticated first-party data.
  • Clerk.io, Klevu, Bloomreach and Nosto are commonly cited for cookieless-ready architecture.
