Autocomplete: the short answer
Ecommerce search autocomplete predicts useful queries while a shopper types. Rank suggestions by query popularity, product availability, product type, and the shopper’s partial text. Show a short list that helps the shopper reach a relevant result page quickly, with readable labels and a fast mobile interaction.
What a good suggestion list contains
Suggestions can include product names, categories, brands, and popular queries. Keep each type visually distinct. A shopper searching “run” may need running shoes, a running category, or a specific product. The label should make the destination clear.
Do not fill the list with internal product data or long titles. Use the shortest wording that identifies the destination. Include a product image only when it improves recognition and does not slow the interaction.
Rank suggestions by usefulness
Start with the partial query. Then use query frequency, clicks, orders, inventory, and category context. A popular query with no available products should not outrank a slightly less popular query that leads to a useful result set.
Review seasonal effects. A suggestion that performed well last year may not match current demand. Keep exact brands and products easy to find when the typed text clearly points to them.

| Search conversion rate | Do selected suggestions lead to orders? |

TL;DR
Autocomplete should shorten the path to a useful result. Rank by query, availability, and commercial value. Keep labels clear, optimize for mobile, and measure selections through orders and revenue per search.
