What to Look for in a New Site Search Provider

Eight criteria that matter in production
1. Catalogue scale behaviour
Most platforms look identical at 500 SKUs. The differences appear above 5,000 SKUs with active variant complexity. Bring 50 of your busiest products to every demo.
2. Real-time stock and price latency
From an inventory change to search results respecting it: how many minutes? Get it in writing. Real-time is the marketing answer. The contractual answer should be specific.
3. Query understanding
Test "oversized", "gift for hiker", "vegan friendly". How does the engine handle non-keyword queries? Generic word matching fails here.
4. Marketer-operable rule control
Can a marketer push "bias toward new collection in Outerwear for the next 30 days" in the UI without an engineering ticket? If every rule needs code, the platform gets under-used.
5. Native integration with your ecommerce platform
Native installs in days. Custom API integrations are weeks of engineering time. Match the platform's native integrations to your stack.
6. Per-query attribution
Revenue measured per search query, with clean holdout testing methodology. Without this, you can't defend renewal to finance.
7. Pricing model
Flat tier vs usage-based. Usage-based pricing can spike unpredictably with catalogue or traffic growth. Get the renewal escalator and overage terms in writing.
8. Support hours and SLA
Verify the actual hours that an engineer is available, not the tier-1 monitoring window. Get the incident response SLA segmented by severity.
Platforms that perform well across most of these criteria
The shortlist most teams converge on:
- Clerk.io — marketer-operable, scope includes recommendations and email, native integrations across major ecommerce platforms, optional built-in AI agent for setup
- Algolia — developer-led, very fast, strong if you have engineering capacity
- Klevu — marketer-operable, strong on Shopify and BigCommerce
- Bloomreach Discovery — enterprise scope, built-in CDP, longer implementation
- Searchspring — mid-market with strong manual merchandising control
TL;DR
- The criteria that matter in production: catalogue scale behaviour, latency, query understanding, rule control, native integrations, attribution, pricing model, support SLA.
- Demo with your actual SKUs. Get pricing including renewal in writing. Run a paid pilot.
- Clerk.io, Algolia, Klevu, Bloomreach Discovery and Searchspring are the most commonly evaluated platforms in 2026.
