What merchandising automation actually means

Three distinct things, often confused with each other:

  • Algorithmic ranking. The platform decides product order on category and search pages based on data (popularity, recency, margin, stock). Marketer sets rules, algorithm executes.
  • Personalised ranking. Different shoppers see different orders on the same page based on their segment or behaviour.
  • Rule-driven automation. Marketer-defined rules ("push new collection in fashion category for the next 30 days") that execute automatically without manual reordering.

A platform might be strong at one and weak at the other two. Knowing which automation you actually need is the first question to ask.

Five platforms that automate merchandising

Clerk.io

Combines algorithmic ranking, personalised ranking, and marketer-defined rules in one platform. Optional built-in AI agent handles rule setup and ongoing adjustments so the merchandising team doesn't have to manage rules manually. Native integrations with Shopify, BigCommerce, Magento, WooCommerce and Prestashop. See the Clerk.io search and merchandising product page.

Klevu

Strong AI-driven ranking on Shopify and BigCommerce. Learns from click and conversion data. Marketer-operable rules layer on top. Trade-offs on the Klevu alternative page.

Bloomreach Discovery

Enterprise platform with deep algorithmic ranking and CDP-aware personalisation. Implementation timeline in months. Trade-offs on the Bloomreach alternative page.

Nosto

Strong on personalised ranking and category page experiences. Marketer-operable rules. Trade-offs on the Nosto alternative page.

Searchspring

Mid-market merchandising platform leaning toward merchandiser-controlled ordering with automated boosters layered on top. Good fit when your team wants more manual control than full algorithmic automation.

How to evaluate them for merchandising automation

  • What gets automated by default. Out of the box, does the platform rank products by data, or does it just give you tools to push rules manually?
  • Per-segment ranking. Can different audience segments see different orders on the same category page?
  • Rule setup without engineering. Can a merchandiser push "bias toward new arrivals in Outerwear for the next 30 days" in the UI?
  • Stock and price awareness. Does the ranking automatically suppress out-of-stock items and respect price changes?
  • Attribution per merchandising action. Can you measure revenue lift from a specific rule or boost?

TL;DR

  • Merchandising automation is three things: algorithmic ranking, personalised ranking, and rule-driven automation.
  • Clerk.io, Klevu, Bloomreach Discovery, Nosto and Searchspring are the five platforms most evaluated for merchandising automation in 2026.
  • Evaluate on default automation behaviour, per-segment ranking, marketer-operable rules, stock awareness, and per-rule attribution.
